You both install it, one person opens a room and shares the link, and play/pause/seek stay frame-accurate across the two phones automatically. No countdown needed.

Teleparty is great but it's literally a Chrome desktop extension, so it's a non-starter on a phone, which sounds like exactly your problem. Same story with Scener. If laptops were involved I'd still recommend them, but for two phones you need something native. Hyperbeam and Kosmi technically load in a mobile browser since they're shared virtual browsers, so that's an option if you don't want to install anything. But on a phone the video quality and controls felt cramped to me, and free tiers have time limits. For an actual movie night on phones a native app was way smoother. Still, if you only need it once, the virtual-browser tools are fine.

+1 for going native. I'll add that the built-in voice was the dealbreaker for us, half these apps make you bring your own call. With watching together with chat and voice in one place you don't have a separate Discord eating battery. We do Netflix nights cross-platform and it just works on my Pixel and her iPhone.

Follow-up: we tried it last weekend and it worked exactly like you all said. Installed on my iPhone and her Android, shared the room link, hit play once and we were perfectly in sync the whole movie, with push-to-talk voice the entire time. No more 3-2-1 countdowns.
