What made Rave different, and what to look for in a replacement
Rave was not the first watch party app, but it was the first one that felt native on a phone. Four things defined it: a mobile-first app on iPhone and Android, free voice chat in every room, support for the services people actually pay for (Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+ and HBO Max), and public rooms you could drop into. Judge apps like Rave on the first three. The fourth, public lobbies, is also what reporting around its removal pointed at, so a private, invite-only room model is a feature rather than a loss for most friend groups.
What happened to Rave on iPhone: the timeline
- August 2025: Apple removed Rave from the App Store. Rave says Apple cited "unspecified allegations of fraud and vague concerns about content moderation". Existing installs kept working but stopped receiving updates.
- Late 2025: Rave's website added a banner reading "Apple removed Rave from the App Store" and launched saverave.com to rally users. The Android, Windows and Mac downloads stayed up, and Rave says Apple also flagged its Mac build as malware.
- May 7, 2026: Rave filed antitrust lawsuits against Apple in the United States, Canada, Brazil, the Netherlands and Russia, arguing the removal protected Apple's own SharePlay feature. Apple called the allegations baseless (MacRumors report).
- October 2026 (now): Rave is still not on the iPhone App Store. The lawsuits are at the complaint stage, so there is no date for a return. Rave remains available on Android and Windows.
Apps like Rave for Netflix
Netflix is the strictest service: it does not support SharePlay and it blocks DRM playback in screen share and most virtual browsers. The apps that sync Netflix properly, with each viewer logged into their own account, are Watchly (free), Teleparty (free tier), Hearo, Scener and twoseven. See our best apps to watch Netflix together ranking for a Netflix-only comparison.
Apps like Rave for Android
Android users have the most choice because Rave itself is still on Google Play. Watchly and Hearo are the native alternatives with free voice chat, and Teleparty's Android app covers Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and HBO Max. If your group also has iPhone users, Watchly or Hearo is the only way to keep everyone in one native app.
Apps like Rave for PC
On Windows, Rave's desktop app still works, but it only connects to other Rave users, which now excludes iPhones. Watchly's Chrome extension puts a PC user in the same room as iPhone, Android and Mac friends. Teleparty, Scener and twoseven are strong extension options for all-desktop groups, Metastream is the open-source choice, and Kosmi needs no install at all.
Apps like Rave for Mac
Rave says Apple flagged its Mac build as malware, so many Mac users never got it running. Watchly ships a native Mac App Store app for Apple-silicon Macs; Metastream and Syncplay run on macOS; Teleparty works through its Safari extension or Chrome. Our Rave alternative for Mac guide goes deeper.
Free apps like Rave
Watchly is free for Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Hulu and SoundCloud with voice chat. Hearo is free with ads. Kosmi, Watch2Gether, Scener, Metastream and Syncplay are free for what they support, and SharePlay is free for Apple households. Every one of them, like Rave, still requires each viewer's own subscription to paid services.
Moving a Rave group to Watchly
- Everyone installs Watchly: App Store, Google Play, Mac App Store or the Chrome extension from the download page.
- The host opens a service (Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Hulu or SoundCloud are free), picks the title and taps Share.
- Friends open the link. App users land in the room; browser guests join without an account.
- Press play. Hold to talk, or use reactions and text, exactly like a Rave room.
